Remembering: One Year Later (a slow dance with suicide)

I wrote this post for my dear friend and colleague, Rachel (, as we launched our instagram campaign, Make History Take Action, for Maternal Mental Health Week. Reaching my “anniversary” of my diagnosis has been a truly strange experience; like reaching the anniversary of an ex-boyfriend, except in this case my past lover is Death. My relationship with death lasted months, and I still have fears that one day I’ll break down and call him back. It has taken me so long to trudge my way through the fire, and I have come out scorched but alive. To my dear readers who are still cringing through a slow, seductive tango with suicide—to my dear readers who are looking back at the person they used to be “before”—I am standing here with you. We are strong, we are valiant, and we are worthy.
